The Democratic Platform

This political cartoon by Nathaniel Currier uses sequential imagery and speech balloons to satirize the Democratic Party's compromises on slavery. A well-dressed politician stands apart while party members form a human platform, literally supporting the party's positions. The composition employs the visual language emerging in mid-19th-century prints: distinct scenes, dialogue bubbles, and exaggerated figures to convey political argument. Though not yet the formalized panel layout of later comics, such prints pioneered the grammar of sequential storytelling.
