Caricature Study (Alfred Stieglitz)
Marius de Zayas · 1914

Marius de Zayas's caricature of photographer Alfred Stieglitz employs geometric abstraction and exaggeration to capture his subject's psychological essence. The dual-panel composition, with bold black circles framing the eyes and mathematical notations scrawled across the form, reflects early modernist strategies for distilling character into symbolic language. De Zayas worked in the tradition of European caricaturists who used distortion and visual metaphor rather than literal likeness. The rigid geometric forms and the interplay between linear abstraction and shaded expressionist backgrounds suggest intellectual intensity and artistic vision. This work exemplifies how avant-garde artists of the 1910s repurposed caricature—traditionally a popular form—as a vehicle for modernist experimentation and portraiture.
