Portrait of Martha Carey Thomas
Wallace Morgan · 1912

Wallace Morgan's ink sketch captures Martha Carey Thomas in profile, the Bryn Mawr College president and educational reformer. Morgan, a prolific illustrator for major American publications, employs the economical line work characteristic of early twentieth-century portrait journalism. The drawing's gestural quality—the flowing skirt, the contemplative pose, the carefully rendered facial features—exemplifies the illustrative tradition that paralleled the emerging comic strip form. Both drawing types shared visual vocabularies developed in newspaper production: efficient linework, attention to character physiognomy, and compositional clarity suited to reproduction. Though not a comic strip, Morgan's work represents the broader illustrated journalism ecosystem from which sequential narrative art would develop.
