Portrait of James K. Polk

Jacques Reich · 1899

Portrait of James K. Polk
This engraved portrait by Jacques Reich depicts James K. Polk, the eleventh President of the United States (1845-1849). The skilled crosshatching and linear rendering technique was characteristic of late-nineteenth-century newspaper illustration and book production. Reich's careful attention to physiognomy—the angular features, penetrating gaze, and period-appropriate clothing—captures Polk during the era of territorial expansion and the Mexican-American War. Such portraits appeared regularly in newspapers and periodicals, establishing visual conventions for representing public figures that would influence early comic strip portraiture.
