Boom!!!—So Near, and Yet So Far
Thomas Nast · July 10, 1880

Thomas Nast's political cartoon depicts a coffin-shaped ballot box sinking into quicksand, representing the precarious state of electoral integrity. The figure emerging from the box wears exaggerated features typical of 19th-century caricature. Text panels on the coffin list voting obstacles: "Non-partisan election," "stuffed ballot box," "Hancock's votes 9 of 2," and "Tilden's votes 1." A figure above holds a flag marked "fraud." This image exemplifies how newspapers like Harper's Weekly employed visual satire to engage readers in political debate. Nast's work established the modern political cartoon as a powerful medium, combining sequential imagery with pointed commentary—techniques foundational to comic strip development.
