Why We (Republicans) Laugh

Thomas Nast's political cartoon depicts a large dog in human dress—a caricature representing the Democratic Party—being restrained by a smaller figure. Nast pioneered the visual strategies that would define political cartooning: symbolic characters, speech balloons, and satirical scenarios compressed into single images.
