Field Sketch of Rocky Canyon

Thomas Moran's pencil sketch captures the dramatic topography of an American canyon landscape. The artist worked rapidly from nature, layering gestural lines to define towering rock formations and steep terrain. Moran was among the most prolific landscape painters of the nineteenth century, known for monumental canvases of the American West.
