Alice Pike Barney (1857–1931) presents herself in three-quarter view, her gray hair swept upward, shoulders draped in a rust-and-gold robe against a cool blue interior. Barney worked primarily in portraiture and theatrical design rather than comics, but her confident brushwork and psychological directness typify early twentieth-century American portrait painting. A Cincinnati native and Los Angeles resident, she moved between Gilded Age society circles and artistic avant-garde communities, creating works that emphasized her subjects' individuality through color and gestural paint application rather than strict likeness.
