Onteora

Alice Pike Barney, born Cincinnati, OH 1857-died Los Angeles, CA 1931 · 1903

Onteora
Alice Pike Barney's *Onteora* depicts a forest interior suffused with golden autumn light filtering through tall birches and evergreens. The painting captures dappled foliage and luminous ground cover rendered in warm ochres, greens, and whites. Barney (1857–1931), a Cincinnati-born painter, sculptor, and playwright, created this work during her artistic maturity. The composition's vertical emphasis on tree trunks and layered atmospheric perspective reflects early twentieth-century landscape practice, balancing precise observation of natural detail with Impressionist sensitivity to color and light effects. Onteora refers to the Catskill Mountain arts community in New York, where Barney maintained a studio and participated in the cultural circles of her era.
