Study for Two Lunettes, Iowa State Capitol Rotunda

Kenyon Cox's preparatory sketches for monumental lunette compositions destined for the Iowa State Capitol. The two arched designs display classical allegorical figures—personifications of civic virtues and historical narrative—arranged in balanced, frieze-like compositions. Cox's fluid ink line defines drapery and musculature with academic precision. These studies demonstrate the planning process for large-scale mural decoration, wherein the artist worked out figural poses, spatial relationships, and compositional harmony before executing the finished works.
