Battle Pass, Prospect Park, Site of the Battle of Long Island

Ernest C. Peixotto's ink and wash study captures a landscape layered with historical memory. The upper panel renders Prospect Park's dense foliage and water features with atmospheric perspective, while the lower circular vignette focuses on a commemorative stone monument, half-buried in vegetation. Peixotto, a San Francisco-born artist working in New York, employed loose brushwork and tonal variation to suggest both the present park and the Revolutionary War battle fought on this ground decades earlier.
