Ernest C. Peixotto, born San Francisco, CA 1869-died New York City 1940 · 1897

Philadelphia, View from the Park
Ernest C. Peixotto's pen-and-ink sketch captures an urban plaza framed by bare-branched trees, with a classical building anchoring the composition at center distance. Several figures populate the foreground and middle ground, their forms rendered in quick, assured linework characteristic of late-nineteenth-century illustration. The artist employs strong spatial recession and architectural detail to establish atmospheric perspective. Peixotto, a San Francisco-born illustrator and muralist active during this period, contributed to the visual conventions of urban reportage that shaped American periodical illustration in the 1890s.
