Valley Forge

Valley Forge
Ernest C. Peixotto's *Valley Forge* combines illustration and cartography in a single narrative composition. The large watercolor panorama depicts the Revolutionary War encampment landscape with topographical precision, while the inset map shows the site's geographical layout and strategic position. Peixotto, a San Francisco-born illustrator and muralist, specialized in historical scenes and travel documentation. This work exemplifies late-nineteenth-century American illustration practice—the integration of reportorial exactness with artistic interpretation that shaped the visual vocabulary of early newspaper graphics and comics, where sequential spatial organization and detailed rendering conveyed historical information to mass audiences.
