Little Falls
Ernest C. Peixotto's watercolor sketch captures a rural cemetery scene with white headstones scattered across overgrown ground, a modest wooden farmhouse and stone residence visible beyond a fence line. Bare trees frame the composition under an overcast sky. Peixotto, a San Francisco-born artist (1869–1940), worked across illustration, painting, and printmaking during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His careful attention to architectural detail and atmospheric effect reflects the period's shift toward naturalistic representation in American visual arts. This work exemplifies the documentary impulse in sketch-based illustration that preceded the modernist movements.
