Street Scene Studies

Ernest C. Peixotto's pen sketches capture urban architectural details and street life at the turn of the twentieth century. The upper panel depicts a tree-lined avenue with period buildings and figures, while the lower study focuses on a wooden fence—compositional elements typical of Peixotto's work as an illustrator and muralist. These preliminary drawings demonstrate the careful observation and line work that characterized newspaper illustration before photographic reproduction became standard. Peixotto, a San Francisco native, contributed significantly to American periodical illustration during the 1890s-1920s.
