Ray of Sunshine

Alice Pike Barney's 1923 portrait demonstrates the experimental techniques that modernist painters brought to figurative work in the early twentieth century. Using pastel on paper, Barney rendered the sitter's head in warm pinks and flesh tones against a cool, atmospheric background of blues and greens. The artist employed loose, gestural marks and soft blending to suggest form rather than define it precisely. Barney, a Cincinnati-born painter and sculptor who spent much of her career in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, worked across multiple mediums and was known for her portraiture and interior design. This work exemplifies the Post-Impressionist and early modern approaches to portraiture that prioritized expressive color and subjective interpretation over academic realism.
