Woman with Child in Red Suit

Charles Demuth, born Lancaster, PA 1883-died Lancaster, PA 1935 · 1916

Woman with Child in Red Suit
Charles Demuth's watercolor study combines loose figural drawing with vibrant color washes—reds, blues, and yellows applied in fluid patches across the paper. The composition shows a seated woman and standing child rendered with minimal line work, the forms completed by translucent pigment rather than contour. Demuth, a Lancaster, Pennsylvania native, developed this approach during his early career, blending Post-Impressionist color theory with modernist economy of line. The work exemplifies the experimental techniques American artists adopted in the early twentieth century, moving beyond academic naturalism toward abstraction through selective use of color and form.
