Seated Woman

Robert Henri, born Cincinnati, OH 1865-died New York City 1929 · 1924

Seated Woman
Robert Henri's ink sketch captures a figure in flowing drapery, seated in three-quarter view. The drawing demonstrates Henri's economical line work and attention to form through selective shading. Henri taught at the Chase School of Art and later the Art Students League, where he became a central figure in American modernism. His emphasis on direct observation and expressive technique influenced generations of American artists working in both fine art and illustration during the early twentieth century.
