Charles Lee Frank's spare pen sketch depicts a desolate landscape with scattered trees and a fallen log in the foreground. A formation of birds crosses the pale sky above. Frank, a New Orleans–born artist active in the early twentieth century, worked primarily in ink and wash. This modest study exemplifies the economical line work and atmospheric subtlety that characterized his approach to natural subjects, rendered with minimal detail yet considerable spatial depth.
