Edmund C. Messer's 1884 landscape drawing demonstrates the naturalistic tradition that preceded the explosion of newspaper illustration in the 1890s. Rendered in graphite with careful attention to atmospheric perspective, the composition—featuring a prominent tree, distant buildings, and open field—reflects the academic training many commercial artists received before comic strips emerged. By the turn of the century, artists working in newspapers would develop the visual vocabulary of sequential narrative: panel borders, speech balloons, and recurring characters. Messer's generation of illustrators provided the foundational skills that made this revolution possible.
