Solon H. Borglum, born Ogden, UT 1868-died Stamford, CT 1922 · 1895

Study of Anatomy, #5
Solon H. Borglum's anatomical study demonstrates the artist's rigorous attention to human form. These four views of the lower leg and foot employ crosshatching and fine line work to model musculature and bone structure. Borglum, a sculptor and painter trained in classical traditions, produced such studies as foundational work for his larger artistic practice. The methodical presentation across the sheet—varying the leg's rotation and stance—recalls anatomical drawing traditions that shaped American art instruction in the late nineteenth century.
