Horse Studies

Solon H. Borglum's sketch studies of horses in motion, rendered in graphite with careful attention to anatomical structure and gait. The multiple figure studies on a single page reflect the working method of late-nineteenth-century illustrators who prepared material for newspaper publication and commercial reproduction. Borglum, a sculptor and illustrator, used such studies to develop his understanding of animal form—essential training for artists producing sequential narrative art and editorial illustrations for the expanding illustrated press.
