Crow Creek, S.D.
This pencil sketch by sculptor and artist Solon H. Borglum depicts a landscape near Crow Creek, South Dakota, rendered with careful attention to natural forms. Borglum uses hatching and crosshatching to build volume and shadow across the rolling terrain, with sparse vegetation and fallen timber anchoring the composition. The delicate line work and tonal modeling reveal his training in figure work, applied here to the American frontier landscape. Created during Borglum's early career before his monumental sculptural achievements, the drawing documents both artistic practice and regional geography of the period.
