Le Chateau de Chevenevase
This architectural sketch by sculptor and illustrator Solon H. Borglum depicts a fortified château rendered in graphite with careful attention to perspective and shadow. The composition shows a towered structure with crenellated walls set against a dramatic cliff face, with small figures at ground level providing scale. Borglum's linear hatching technique creates atmospheric depth, contrasting the dark geological formation with the delicate structure below. While primarily known for monumental sculpture, Borglum worked across media including illustration and printmaking, capturing European architectural subjects that influenced American artistic tastes in the early twentieth century.
