Four Arm Studies

Solon H. Borglum, born Ogden, UT 1868-died Stamford, CT 1922 · 1895

Four Arm Studies
This anatomical study by sculptor Solon Borglum demonstrates the careful observation underlying figure drawing in the 1890s. Four studies of a flexed male arm capture musculature from different angles using ink and wash, with smaller detail sketches of the hand and fist. Such anatomical studies formed the foundation of artistic training before photography, allowing artists to understand underlying structure essential to convincing figure work in illustration and fine art.
