Studies
William Page, a 19th-century American painter and draftsman, filled pages with rapid observational sketches—heads, figures, hands, and narrative compositions. These studies demonstrate the artist's practice of capturing form and expression through economical line work. Page worked between portrait painting and historical subjects, and his sketchbooks reveal the foundational work beneath finished canvases: the testing of poses, the recording of physiognomic character, the arrangement of multiple figures within a compositional space. Such working pages were essential to academic practice, a visual thinking-through essential before paint met canvas.
