Tree Study

William Page, American painter and draftsman (1811–1885), executed this botanical study in graphite and wash on paper. The sheet demonstrates the careful observational method practiced by nineteenth-century academic artists: a single tree rendered with precise attention to trunk structure, branch articulation, and foliage mass. Two smaller botanical sketches appear at right. Such studies served as working materials for studio compositions and reflected the era's merger of scientific naturalism with artistic training. Page worked primarily in portraiture and historical painting but maintained the disciplined study practice essential to the period's artistic curriculum.
