Head Study

George Grey Barnard (1863–1938) was an American sculptor and draftsman whose work bridged academic tradition and modernist experimentation. This ink and watercolor study demonstrates his sustained interest in human physiognomy and sculptural form. The curled hair and idealized features recall classical portraiture, while the loose, gestural line work and chromatic passages suggest the artist's engagement with contemporary drawing practices. Barnard's studies from this period served both as independent artworks and preparatory investigations for his public monuments and architectural commissions, which helped define American civic sculpture in the early twentieth century.
