Elihu Vedder's illustration for the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám depicts a chalice suspended in swirling darkness, accompanied by calligraphic text exhorting the viewer to drink—not knowing whence they came nor why they go. Vedder's 1884 edition became the definitive American visual interpretation of the Persian poem, establishing the artist's reputation as a master of symbolic illustration.
