Elihu Vedder's illustration for the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám depicts a chalice wreathed in thorns and flame, a visual metaphor for earthly suffering rendered in the artist's characteristic style. Vedder's 1884 edition illustrations became canonical interpretations of the Persian poem, which experienced a major revival in Victorian England.
