Illustration for Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám

Elihu Vedder, born New York City 1836-died Rome, Italy 1923 · 1883

Illustration for Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám
Elihu Vedder's frontispiece for the 1883 edition of Edward FitzGerald's translation of the Persian poet Omar Khayyám. The composition combines classical allegorical figures with narrative scenes: above, a gathering of robed scholars and philosophers; below, three men in contemplation, attended by a winged figure of Justice or Fate holding a spear. Vedder's intricate linear technique and layered symbolism reflect the aesthetic philosophy of late 19th-century American Orientalism, merging classical Western artistic traditions with exotic literary source material. The work demonstrates the elaborate decorative standards of Gilded Age book illustration.
