Elihu Vedder's illustration for the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám depicts a celestial scribe recording human deeds in a leather-bound book. Three winged figures—a central angel with downcast eyes flanked by two attendants—preside over the scene while mortal hands below reach toward the divine record. Vedder's refined technique combines neoclassical draftsmanship with symbolist sensibility, employing careful cross-hatching and tonal gradation to model form.
