Illustration for Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám: The Magdalen
Elihu Vedder, born New York City 1836-died Rome, Italy 1923 · 1883

Elihu Vedder's pen-and-ink illustration accompanies Edward FitzGerald's translation of the medieval Persian poet. A nude figure crouches in anguish beside a barren landscape, head bowed in remorse. Above, handwritten verse questions what reparation can address past wrongs—the image visualizing themes of sin, regret, and spiritual impossibility central to the Rubáiyát. Vedder's linear technique and allegorical approach exemplify late-nineteenth-century literary illustration, where artists translated philosophical poetry into psychological portraiture through careful draftsmanship and expressive composition.
