Illustration for Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám

Elihu Vedder's pen-and-ink illustration accompanies Edward FitzGerald's translation of the Persian poet Omar Khayyám. A robed figure kneels beside a garden urn, head bowed in contemplation or grief, surrounded by withered poppy pods and spent flowers. The composition balances figural study with botanical precision. Above, calligraphic verse in Vedder's own hand fills a rectangular panel, its decorative lettering echoing medieval manuscript traditions. Vedder (1836–1923), an American expatriate based in Rome, brought Victorian aesthetics to classical and literary subjects, treating translation illustrations as occasions for sustained artistic meditation rather than mere decoration.
