Drapery Study

Kenyon Cox, born Warren, OH 1856-died New York City 1919 · 1874

Drapery Study
This graphite drawing by Kenyon Cox demonstrates the academic training fundamental to nineteenth-century American art instruction. The study isolates fabric folds and their interaction with the human form—a core exercise in atelier practice. Cox's careful modeling of light and shadow across the drapery reveals the structural principles underlying garment representation. Such studies, repeated countless times by students, built the technical foundation for figure drawing and narrative illustration. Cox later became influential as an instructor and muralist, but these foundational studies show the rigorous classical discipline that shaped American artists of the Gilded Age.
