George Elbert Burr, born Monroe Falls, OH 1859-died Phoenix, AZ 1939 · 1900

George Elbert Burr's pen sketch captures the ancient Roman landscape along the Appian Way, with its characteristic aqueduct arches spanning the middle distance and rolling hills beyond. The foreground shows the rough, channeled terrain typical of Burr's topographical studies—rendered with quick, assured linework that conveys both geological structure and atmospheric distance. A solitary figure occupies the lower right, establishing human scale against the monumental Roman engineering. Burr, an Ohio-born artist who spent decades in Arizona studying western landscapes, approached historical European sites with the same precise, naturalistic technique he applied to desert terrain, emphasizing geological formation and light effects over romantic interpretation.
