Pisa from North

George Elbert Burr, born Monroe Falls, OH 1859-died Phoenix, AZ 1939 · 1900

Pisa from North
George Elbert Burr's pen sketch captures the Tuscan cityscape from a northern vantage point, the Leaning Tower prominent among clustered ecclesiastical and civic structures. The drawing demonstrates the precision typical of early twentieth-century architectural illustration, with careful cross-hatching establishing depth and atmospheric perspective across the foreground plain. Burr, an Ohio-born printmaker and draftsman who spent significant periods in the Southwest, traveled extensively through Europe. This work exemplifies the tradition of topographical study that informed both fine art practice and the illustrated press of the period, documenting architectural heritage through direct observation rendered in ink.
