Rhine at Oberwesel

George Elbert Burr's pen-and-ink landscape captures a Rhine River valley town anchored by a fortress crown­ing the hillside. The composition uses linear perspective to pull the viewer across the water toward the clustered spires and fortifications of the settlement. Burr, an Ohio-born artist, employed fine cross-hatching to render atmospheric depth and geological form. The small boat beached in the foreground provides human scale against the monumental landscape. This work reflects the 19th-century tradition of European travel sketching, where American artists documented architectural and topographical subjects through detailed observational drawing.
