Cloud Study

George Elbert Burr's delicate pencil study captures atmospheric effects through parallel hatching and careful gradation of tone. The upper panel renders roiling cumulus clouds with directional strokes that suggest wind and movement, while the lower sketch isolates a single cloud formation in isolation. Burr, an Ohio-born artist who spent his career in Phoenix, was known for landscape etchings and drawings that emphasized light and weather. This study demonstrates the technical foundation underlying his printmaking practice—the patient observation of natural phenomena translated through disciplined line work, characteristic of American academic training in the late nineteenth century.
