Old Bridge at Heidelberg

George Elbert Burr, born Monroe Falls, OH 1859-died Phoenix, AZ 1939 · 1900

Old Bridge at Heidelberg
George Elbert Burr's delicate pen sketch captures the famous Alte Brücke spanning the Neckar River, with the town of Heidelberg rising along the far bank. The artist employs fine linear hatching to suggest landscape depth and atmospheric perspective, the bridge's graceful arches anchoring the composition. Burr, an accomplished landscape draftsman born in Ohio, traveled extensively and produced numerous European studies. This sheet exemplifies the refined observational drawing practices of late-nineteenth-century artists, where on-site sketching remained central to artistic practice before photographic documentation became standard.
