Grand Canyon Study
George Elbert Burr, born Monroe Falls, OH 1859-died Phoenix, AZ 1939 · 1921

This transfer drawing by George Elbert Burr captures the Grand Canyon's layered geology through meticulous cross-hatching and linear perspective. Burr's technique—built from countless parallel lines in ink—constructs volume and atmospheric depth across the composition, moving the viewer's eye from foreground ridges into distant plateaus. The drawing served as a preparatory study, likely transferred to a printing plate for etching or lithography. An accomplished landscape printmaker working in the early twentieth century, Burr specialized in rendering geological formations and desert vistas of the American Southwest, where he eventually settled in Phoenix. His methodical linear approach influenced generations of printmakers and illustrators.
