Fishing Boat and Seagrass Study

Miner Kilbourne Kellogg's field sketch from St. Valery documents careful observation of coastal subjects. The upper study renders a beached fishing boat with moored rope and scattered gear, showing the artist's attention to maritime detail and spatial relationships. Below, dense seagrass studies demonstrate Kellogg's method of capturing vegetation through varied hatching and gestural marks. These working sketches, typical of nineteenth-century practice, served as reference material for larger compositions. Kellogg, a landscape painter trained in the Hudson River tradition, used such on-site drawings to develop his finished works.
