This engraved portrait by Winslow Homer depicts William E. Burton, a celebrated stage comedian of the mid-nineteenth century. The work appeared in *Ballou's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion*, a Boston-based illustrated weekly that brought wood-engraved imagery to middle-class readers. Homer's technique—fine parallel lines creating volume and shadow—was standard for newspaper illustration of the era. Burton's formal dress and seated pose convey theatrical authority; the sketched props at left suggest his profession. Such portraits anchored the illustrated press, which would soon develop sequential narrative panels and speech balloons, establishing visual conventions that shaped the emerging medium of comics.
