This engraved portrait of Governor William Haile appeared in *Ballou's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion*, a Boston weekly that combined news, fiction, and illustration for middle-class readers. The image demonstrates the wood-engraving techniques that dominated mid-nineteenth-century periodicals before photographic reproduction. Winslow Homer, then early in his career as an illustrator, contributed regularly to such publications. The accompanying text—biographical narrative paired with a landscape vignette titled "Sunset"—typified the era's integration of portraiture, letterpress, and decorative imagery, a visual format that would influence the development of illustrated magazines and, eventually, the comic strip.
