Croquis (Sketchbook)
Frederick Carl Frieseke's sketchbook cover from 1921 exemplifies the artist's working practice. Born in Michigan but based primarily in France, Frieseke developed his distinctive approach to figure painting and light effects through constant drawing. This cover, with its elegant Art Nouveau–influenced lettering, housed studies and preliminary compositions. Frieseke's sketches served as laboratories for exploring form, color relationships, and composition—the foundation of his finished paintings. Such working materials reveal how early twentieth-century artists synthesized observation with artistic intention, translating rapid notation into refined salon works.
