Sunday Newspaper Comics, 1919
This page from a Texas Sunday edition shows the commercial ecosystem of early newspaper comics: modest strip advertisements interspersed with product placement and local business notices. By 1919, the Sunday funny pages had become essential circulation drivers for papers nationwide. The visual language—panel layouts, speech balloons, character repetition across installments—emerged from pioneers like Richard Outcault and Winsor McCay in the 1890s–1900s. Comics were not yet collected into books; readers encountered them serially in papers. These strips and their advertising neighbors funded both journalism and the emerging visual storytelling medium that would eventually spawn the comic book industry of the 1930s onward.
