The Glendale News, October 14, 1910
Boughton, F.J. McClure, E.M. · October 14, 1910

This local California newspaper from Glendale's early incorporated years demonstrates the newspaper page layouts that birthed American comics. Dense columns of classified ads, business notices, and local reporting share space with display advertisements featuring bold typography and illustrations. The page's visual grammar—segmented text blocks, illustrated vignettes for commercial promotion, and the interplay of type sizes—mirrors the panel-and-caption structure developing in contemporary Sunday funnies. Early newspaper comics emerged from this dense advertising environment, where recurring characters in commercial spots and serialized illustrations gradually evolved into dedicated comic strips. This 1910 page captures the transitional moment before comics separated into their own dedicated sections.
