Bust-Length Portrait of Thomas Nast
This photographic portrait—not a cartoon plate—shows Thomas Nast himself: a heavyset man in a dark wool suit, white collar, and cravat pin, wearing a full, curling beard and close-cropped dark hair. The image is a cabinet card or albumen print, the standard studio format of the 1880s. Nast gazes slightly off-axis with a composed, unsentimental expression. No caption, label, or caricature is present. The portrait documents the artist at roughly the height—and the close of—his Harper's Weekly career, which ended around 1886. It offers a rare look at the man whose pen shaped American political iconography for a generation.
