"Help! Help!"

Nast, Thomas, 1840-1902, artist · Harper's Weekly, March 1, 1884

"Help! Help!"
A woman clutches an infant on a makeshift raft of broken timber, surrounded by churning floodwaters. Rain slashes diagonally across the frame; in the distance, splintered trees suggest catastrophic inundation. She reaches outward with one arm—pleading, not grasping—while bracing the child against her chest. Nast's caption, "Help! Help!", doubles as her cry and as a direct appeal to the reader. The image likely responds to the devastating Ohio and Mississippi River floods of early 1884, which left tens of thousands homeless. Nast here sets aside partisan combat to press a humanitarian argument: federal relief is a moral obligation, not a political choice.
