Liberal Thomas W. Tipton

Thomas Nast · March 23, 1872

Liberal Thomas W. Tipton
Nast draws Nebraska Senator Thomas W. Tipton mid-tantrum at his Senate desk: fist raised, mouth open in a shout, papers and a book scattered on the floor. A colleague behind him stares in visible alarm. The caption reads simply "The Liberal Tipton." The word *Liberal* is doing the damage—Tipton had broken with Grant's Republicans to join the Liberal Republican movement. Tipton's face is rendered with exaggerated wild hair and bulging eyes, characteristic of Nast's caricature style. Nast would spend the 1872 election attacking Liberal Republicans as traitors and frauds.
